A True Professional ?

It has become increasingly common among theological educators to refer to their task

in professional terms. We train people to do a professional job in the churches by

being good professionals ourselves. Yet there are real problems associated with the

use of this adjective in theological education today, in theory and practice. This

article seeks to examine the justification and dangers of regarding the task of

theological education as professional and, in so doing, sets out a particular vision of

our calling.
